I decided it would be fun to do a post talking about the gear I use! Compared to some, I guess what I use is very minimal. That doesn't mean I don't have a list in the back of my head of things I want in the future, I just really try and make use of the little gear I have. This has made me really zero in and focus on my technique, which is never a bad thing!
I use a Nikon D600. I have been using Nikon since I bought my first SLR and haven't really seen a need to use anything else. A lot of photographers that are in a similar field of photography as I am use Canon. Sometimes I see great photographs done with the likes of a Canon 5D Mark iii and think to myself "Wow, maybe it is worth the switch?", but of course, it's not necessarily the camera or the gear that make the photographer. It can help of course, but what it really come down to is your skill and technique! I've followed photographers that produce amazing work using the lowest end DSLR.
I have 3 lenses that I use. the Nikkor 50mm f1.8, Nikkor 85mm f1.8 and a Rokinon 8mm Fisheye.
Up until June of this year, I exclusively used my 50mm f1.8 for years. It's inexpensive and versatile lens. It's my number one recommendation for any one wanting to pick up photography. I've used it for portraits/fashion/concerts/landscape.
This year, I finally decided it was time to buy the 85mm that I had my eye on for years and let me tell you: it did not disappoint! This is the lens I use the most now. I notice a great difference from the speed and backlighting to bokeh and auto-focus. I can't see myself putting it down any time soon. I've used it for portraits/fashion/concert.
The Rokinon 8MM fisheye only really serves one purpose in my camera bag: concerts. Paired with my Speedlight and Gary Fong Lightsphere, I get my desired effect every time! I must say, I'm glad to have gone with the cheaper Rokinon alternative because this lens has taken quite the beating! It's been hit by people, guitar cases, mic stands, you name it! Even with it's battle wounds, it still gives me the results my clients want
